Friday Fashion Poll

We’re running a #tbt contest on Instagram this month for Sally Beauty’s 50 Years of Beauty, and I’ve had a lot of fun digging through old albums looking for funny old photos to submit.

Some of mine brought up questions, like why did I love butterfly clips so much? Some were a little embarrassing/eye-opening when I realized that I have the same haircut now as I did most of elementary school. (Side part, long bob. Classic for a reason? I hope??) And some will never been seen by the public. Yikes!

Anyway, besides the long bob that I apparently keep going back to, I think the style I still love most is The Rachel. I wore that look all of 7th grade and 18 years later (gulp!), it remains one of my favorites. It breaks my heart a little when I read interviews with Jennifer Aniston and she says it’s one of her LEAST favorites, but I like to think that she’s just grumpy from talking about her hair for so many years. No one can hate something so cute. ;)

I have a confession to make. I have not painted my toes since August, and I didn’t even have to remove the old polish – it chipped and grew itself all off. How horrifying (and gross)!

The problem is, as soon as sandal season is over I tend to forget about making my feet look pretty. They go from slippers to close toed shoes, to slippers again when I get home from work, so I rarely look at them. I love having my toes painted, but when it’s cold I have a hard time being motivated to do anything about it. I’d much rather cuddle up with another cup of hot chocolate, than break out the polish.

What about you? Do you keep up with pedicures during the winter, or do you let them slide like me?

vamplipsI’m honestly a little obsessed with the 90s. My radio stays on the 90s music channel, and I think I’ve read every single 90s themed Buzzfeed in existence. What can I say? This millennial loves her some 90s nostalgia!

So naturally when I started seeing celebrities rocking vampy lips, I got very excited. My first love was a lipstick and nail polish that coincidentally both had the word “raisin” in their name. (Apparently raisin was a popular color descriptor in the mid-90s.) My mother called it “dried blood” but I called it “fabulous!”

And now that it’s back in style, I definitely see myself embracing this trend. Too bad I don’t still have my old Doc Martins to go with it!

Hair bows were pretty much my life growing up, and the bigger the better! No outfit was complete without a bow the size of a bird, perched atop my ponytail. I had them in every color, made out of every type of material, including shoelaces and puff painted clear plastic.

But all good things must come to an end, and by the time I reached middle school my bow wearing days were over. Or so I thought…

Lately I’ve been seeing a comeback of adult women wearing bows! Big, velvety bows that we wore with tragic fashion statements, like one piece floral jumpsuits with huge bib collars. (What were we thinking?) And I’m not talking about seeing hair bows on random women at the grocery store. I’m talking about fashionista celebrities.

Could bows truly be back? Should my inner 9 year old be excited? Would you ever wear one as an adult? Please take a moment to vote and let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Bonus – post a throwback picture of you wearing your biggest hair bow on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter for a chance to be featured on one of our social networks! #sallybeautybowlove

The next big thing in nail trends is…nothing. As in, no polish or beautiful nail art like we’ve become accustomed to. Just clean, buffed, simple bare nails.

On one hand, you don’t have to worry about chips and maintenance. On the other hand, BORING. I for one do not see myself giving up nail polish anytime soon. I don’t feel properly accessorized unless my nails are sporting a perfect pop of color to complement my outfit.

What about you? Would you dare to go bare or does your love for colored nails continue?

Very shortly (today, actually!) I will be zooming down the road for a little last minute vacation to the mountains. To say I’m a little bit excited, is an understatement.

How many of you make packing lists before a trip? I totally do, and it’s about the one area of my life that I’m OCD. A girl has to stay organized when it comes to clothes, right?

As I’ve been writing my list for this vacation, I keep going back and forth as to whether or not I want to take my make-up and styling tools. My agenda for the week is a whole lot of napping, watching so-bad-they’re-good TV movies, and long walks in the mountains. It’s so tempting to give my skin and hair a break, but can I actually go a week without “fixing” myself up?

We’ll see if I actually pull out of the driveway today sans make-up bag and curling iron. Maybe I’ll bring it along and then leave it in the suitcase the entire trip. Or, maybe I’ll give in to the temptation and “get pretty” every day.

What about you? When you go on a relaxing vacation, do you let your face and hair rest?

How old were you when you first started wearing make-up?

I distinctly remember the first time I wore lipstick. I was in sixth grade, and it was a frosty apricot I “borrowed” from my older sister’s Caboodle. I foolishly thought it was subtle enough that my mother wouldn’t notice, but of course she did and made me wipe it off before we went to church. Kids think they’re so sneaky, don’t they? There is nothing subtle about frost!

The next year when I went to middle school, is when I was finally able to start wearing make-up regularly. And boy did I wear it! Think lots of grocery store waxy blue eyeliner and bright pink lipstick, which was of course reapplied during every passing period at my locker mirror. I went back that year to visit an old elementary school teacher and the first thing she literally said was, “I see you discovered lipstick.” #embarrassing

What about you? What was your first experience with makeup? We’d love to hear your stories!

But, considering how many times I’ve checked myself in a mirror after a conversation and been horrified to see I have lipstick smeared everywhere

What about you? Do you let people know when they have something on or in their teeth, or do you just let it slide?

Last week my mother called me for one of our chats, and mentioned her annoyance that she couldn’t find a nail polish at her manicurist’s that matched her lipstick.

Say what?

Since I rarely wear polish shades that you would ever find in lipsticks, I’ve never matched my nails to my lips and didn’t realize this was a thing. Somehow I don’t think I could pull off teal lipstick. :)

What about you? Do you match your lipstick to your nail polish?

Do you have a signature manicure style? For instance, do you always wear some sort of nail art, or do you stick to neutrals?

Mine changes up depending on my mood. I love wearing glitters, but if I’m busy I will wear cremes so I don’t have to deal with removing stubborn glitter. I rarely wear nail art except for an accent nail once in a while. And, you will almost never see me in reds, pinks and taupes. Too conservative for these tips!

What about you? What’s your manicure style? Does it change according to mood and season?
