That son of mine…

It’s been awhile since I’ve told a teenage son story. Don’t get me wrong, he is full of witty comments and the stories are overflowing, but it’s been awhile since we’ve shared a nail polish moment.

Well, we shared one. This fall, FingerPaints launched Fun-fetti, which is a multi-color, multi-shape glitter in a clear base.

Anyway, one day while he was out I applied the glitter polish to my toesies. He didn’t notice for a couple of days and then these words came out of his mouth “WHAT IS ON YOUR TOES?!” with disgust. I’m used to getting that from my mother, but not him.

“Well, son, it’s Fun-Fetti. Isn’t it great with all the different colors? The reflection of the light, the fun shades - it makes my toes want to dance! The look on his face definitely let me know that he did not want me dancing. Moms are soooo embarrassing, right? =)

But what do teenage boys know about fashion anyway? FingerPaints Fun-Fetti truly is fun and colorful! You can apply it alone or layer it with your favorite color. Whatever the case, it will dazzle!

It’s available online for only 2 more weeks, so get it while you can!

FingerPaints Fun-Fetti

Growing up my sister always had an angel food cake with funfetti frosting for her birthday. That creamy, color-flecked frosting was so delicious it almost made up for the fact that someone was getting presents and that someone wasn’t me. I’m the baby of the family, what can I say? :)

Those birthday memories plus the fact that I’m slightly obsessed with all things sparkly at the moment, makes the limited edition FingerPaints Fun-Fetti (available exclusively at SallyBeauty.com) my new favorite thing.

It’s a densely packed multi-color glitter in a clear base that looks fabulous on its own, or layered over a polish of your choice. I usually wear it on a bare nail, but for New Year’s Eve I plan on layering it over gold polish to up the sparkle factor. You can never have too much bling, am I right?

Are you planning on rocking the sparkly nail this New Year’s Eve? Any fellow funfetti frosting devotees out there?

Gelish Tip – Layering

Did you know that you can layer Gelish gel polish?  Yes, you heard that correctly!  We polish lovers love to layer colors, so I was very excited to hear that Gelish can be layered!

All you need to do is pick a dark color and a light color. Follow the directions as you normally would.  For the first layer of gel polish, apply the dark color. The second layer of gel polish will be the light color.  Voila! You have a beautiful finish and a fun, new color!

Gelish even has a collection that is especially for layering in stores right now through October! The Aurora Collection has 6 colors just for this purpose!

Try it out and let me know what colors you used!

Nail Tip of the Day

A base coat is the beginning step of polishing your nails. When I was young I never used a base coat because I didn’t understand why I needed to. Of course, my nails were always stained from the polish and the polish wouldn’t last at all. You live and you learn.

So, always start with the base coat. The natural oils in your nails keep the polish from sticking for more than a day or two.  Base coats create a barrier that helps protect your nails from staining and it helps adhere the polish to your nail, which keeps the polish on longer.

There are many base coats out there. Ridge fillers, strengthening base coats, moisturizing base coats – you name it, it probably exists. With all these options, you’re sure to find the best one for you and your needs.

If you need help figuring out which one is best for you, leave a comment and we’ll pick out one together.

Happy polishing!

My Favorite Beauty Products

I just returned from a beautiful weekend in San Diego at the BlogHer conference. I met some truly amazing women bloggers and had the best time socializing and learning.

After finding out that I was with Sally Beauty, the first question out of everyone’s mouth was, “What’s your favorite product?” So, I decided I should do a round-up of my Top Five Favorite Sally Beauty Products.

In no particular order:

1. Ion Color Brilliance Permanent Creme Hair Color in 3G – My hair has been a lot of colors over the years, but this has to be my favorite shade. It’s shiny, has just a hint of red for warmth and makes my hair feel and look super healthy.

2. Seche Vite Fast Dry Top Coat - I refuse to paint my nails without this. It gives my polish a glass-like finish, dries in a snap and keeps them from chipping. I apply it every couple of days to keep my manicure looking fresh.

3. China Glaze Refresh-Mint – You know how newly engaged women constantly hold out their hand to admire their ring? That’s what I do when I wear this polish.

4. Miracle 7 Leave-in Conditioner - Now here’s a product that actually lives up to the hype. It’s ahhmazing. I love it because I have fine hair that gets weighed down easily, but needs a lot of conditioning, and Miracle 7 takes care of it.

5. Palladio Liquid Eye Liner in Black Forest - I always made a mess with liquid liner until I tried Palladio. The brush is super easy to work with and lets me draw perfect lines. Black Forest is a great color because it’s dark without being as harsh as black.

So, what do you think?

Gelish – Not just for naked nails!

A product thumbnail of Gelish Tiger BlossomAs Gelish Polish becomes the new craze for those with natural nails, acrylic fans need not be left behind!

Contrary to popular belief, you CAN put Gelish over acrylic nails. In fact, it actually allows you to leave the salon with complete confidence that your new nail color will not get smudged or nicked, as Gelish Polish dries under a UV light in 2 minutes flat!

Nothing is more frustrating than leaving a salon and having to be careful with every move you make for the next hour until your regular polish dries. Who has time for that?

So, acrylic lovers, now you know.

Scrap the regular polish and join the Gelish revolution!

Bye bye bubbles!

I like bubbles in my champagne, not on my nails. It’s hard enough to find time to give yourself a manicure, and the last thing you need is to spend an hour painting your nails just to end up with a bubbly result. Here are some tips that will help solve this problem:

  1. 1. Apply very thin coats of polish. Allow each coat to dry before applying the next.

2. Add a drop of nail polish thinner (or just a drop of polish remover) into the polish bottle.

3. Don’t shake the polish bottle before use since shaking creates bubbles. Instead, try rubbing the bottle back and forth in your hands.

Any of these tips will help prevent bubbles from forming on your fresh paint job. Give it a try and let us know how it works!

How to make your neon nails POP!

Have you ever noticed that neon nail polish looks so much brighter in the bottle than it does on your nails?

It is always a disappointment when you are expecting a bright, vibrant color and it turns out to be a duller version of what you wanted.

The solution to this problem is simple. All you need to do is apply a base coat of white nail polish before applying your neon color, and BAM! The color will be as bright as the neon signs in Vegas. Check out the difference in the pictures and then try it for yourself.

Never settle for dull neon nails again!
