Mothers are full of advice. It’s part of the job description. As far as beauty advice goes, mine likes to tell me to put on lipstick. “You look pretty! But, where’s your lipstick?” “Have fun tonight. Be safe! Put on lipstick!” Or while looking at pictures, “Looks like you had a great time. Why aren’t you wearing lipstick?” To be fair, I do have pale lips that tend to disappear on my face so she really is trying to do me a favor. But, in the grand tradition of mother-daughter relationships, do I listen? Not often.
Do you have a piece of beauty advice your mom gives you, or gave you in the past? Please share in the comments and on Monday we’ll post some of our favorites.

For the holiday we thought it would be fun to take a peek into the minds of some of our favorite beauty bloggers and get their thoughts on Christmas style.
Here’s what they had to say!

Even though it’s not really sticking, today is our first snow day. I woke up to a snow-dusted yard and the realization that it was actually winter and I should start getting serious about my winter beauty routine. Do the seasons sneak up on anyone else?
Here are a few switches I make when the weather turns chilly:
- I’m a big fan of Frutique skincare products. In the warmer months, I use Frutique Apple Night Restore Crème as my nightly moisturizer. But, I need a little more oomph in the moisture department in the winter, so at night I switch over to Frutique Hydrating Peach Smooth Crème. It’s a very thick and creamy moisturizer and fixes my patchy, dry skin right up.
- For my hair, I use Miracle 7 Deep Conditioner on a daily basis, instead of my usual Miracle 7 Color Protect Conditioner. It keeps my dry, static-prone strands in check.
- Beyond Belief Whipped Crème in Vanilla is my winter lifesaver. I’m vigilant about washing my hands, especially during flu season. Add cold weather into the mix and my hands get painfully dry. This crème is moisturizing but not greasy, and the scent is light enough to not overwhelm any coworkers.
What changes do you make to your routine when it gets cold? I’d love to hear about them!

I am a TOTAL Halloween girl. It’s definitely my favorite holiday and I look forward to spooky, ghostly fun every year.
But, I have a problem. For someone who loves Halloween as much as I do, I can NEVER decide on a costume. I usually end up throwing something together at the last minute and am never satisfied with the result. So this year I have vowed to get my act together sooner. Yes, Halloween is in a week, but for me this is a major improvement.
I spent the morning looking around SallyBeauty.com for some inspiration and came up with a few products that I think would be super fun to incorporate into a costume. No decisions yet, but it’s a start!
Do you have trouble deciding on a costume? Any ideas you want to share? I need all the help I can get!

1. Ardell Wild Lashes in Diva
2. Palladio Herbal Tinted Lip Balm
3. Beyond The Zone Color Bombz in Untamed Turquoise
4. China Glaze Haunting Halloween Crackle Collection
5. Sally Girl Sparkle Effects in Gleaming Green

My mother has owned her own salon since I was a little boy, and my childhood is filled with memories of being in her shop on weekends and during the summers. I used to sweep the floors, make change for customers, fold towels and remove the papers from permanent wave rods. I remember of all the women in the salon gossiping, laughing and telling jokes that made no sense to me at the time. I remember the smells of hairspray and perms, the sounds of dryers and 70s music on the radio. It was a great experience. I always felt like I had a second home, and an extended family.
Another member of our salon family was the traveling salesman. Usually on a sunny, Saturday afternoon a salesman would come by the shop with his sample case and notebook and he’d sit and chat with my mom about what products she needed, but also just to chit-chat about the Texas heat or high school football. It was a very personal and nostalgic way of doing business. Since her salon was quite a ways from a major metropolitan area, Mom had to stock up on all her supplies. It could be weeks before the salesman would be back around. She would write the guy a check for an order that was taken by hand, then have to wait for her supplies to arrive. Sure, it was personal, but not terribly practical—this was still years before the first cell phone!
Looking back, it’s a bit ironic that I now work for Sally Beauty in our eCommerce department. For those of us old enough to remember, the Internet (and ecommerce) changed everything. It brought something to the retail business that seemed like science fiction. Today, you can turn on your computer (or mobile device) order a product in two seconds, and have it shipped right to your salon door. Plus, you can buy the exact amount your salon needs without worrying that you can’t get a replacement soon enough. If you’re like my mom, you can still stock up for a month and take advantage of shipping offers; or you can buy what you need for one particular customer who is coming next week. You can also go on SallyBeauty.com and use our AutoShip method to make sure you never run out of items you use regularly.
Have we seen the end of the traveling salesman? Not just yet. There are still those shops like my mom’s that prefer the old-fashioned way of doing business (she just uses her computer for solitaire). But for the next generation of salon owners, we’d like to welcome you to the extended family at SallyBeauty.com. Who knows, maybe the day will come when stylists can simply wish for salon supplies and they’ll appear. Maybe one day they’ll look back on the Internet with a feeling of warm, fuzzy nostalgia.

Commitment phobia is defined as an avoidance of long-term partnership. Most hear the term and think of romantic relationships, but it can apply to other areas of your life as well.
For example, I have a hard time committing to economy size bottles of shampoo, and sometimes picking a new shade of eye shadow makes me unnecessarily nervous. Like it’s going to be the end of the world if I don’t look great in taupe eye shadow! =) We all have our quirks, I guess.
For all my fellow beauty product commitment-phobes, I’ve rounded up a list of fun products that you can try worry-free.
- Sally Girl Makeup and Polish – These teeny tiny beauties are great for testing out different colors, without spending a lot of money. At $0.99, you can afford to experiment. You never know…purple polish could just be your new BFF Polish for Life!
- Travel size liquids – Quite a few brands at Sally Beauty have come out with travel size versions of their products. Buy a few and see which ones you like the best before committing to full size.
- Semi-permanent Hair Color – Looking to try out a new hair color? That can be scary, especially if you’ve had the same shade for quite awhile. Semi-permanent hair color is kind of a “try before you buy” miracle product. It allows you to test out a color, without having to commit to it long-term. It washes out in a 6-8 shampoos so if the color isn’t for you, you aren’t stuck with it. Love it? Make it last longer with permanent color.

As a mom of three girls, I know that beach bag musts go far beyond a towel and umbrella. A perfectly lovely day at the beach can turn ugly fast when a few of these are forgotten.
Sunscreen – we cover every last inch of our bodies with it, or so we think. Sunburned lips are no picnic and can really hurt. Keep lips covered by making sure your lip balm has sunscreen. Pucker Up carries one with Aloe and SPF15 or a medicated one with SPF30.
Salt water can create some great beachy waves until you try to comb through them. Bringing a wide tooth comb and leave-in detangler helps you get through tangled hair easier and also keep hair from drying out in all the sun. I love the Plugged in Shower Comb because it has a hook to hang it from in the shower and my kids love the smell of the Beyond the Zone Last Call Leave-In Conditioner. Also make sure that any ponytail tie you use is snag free.
It’s also a good idea to bring some makeup remover wipes. Not that I expect you head to the beach with much makeup, but it is a great way to remove sunscreen at the end of the day. I generally keep a pack of the Fria Makeup Remover Towelettes in my beach bag. These have vitamin E which can help soothe and refresh skin.
So there are a few tips from a seasoned mom on how to make your trip the beach a little bit nicer. I would love to hear any other tips you may have.

Ah summer. Flip-flops, Dreamcicles and days at the beach. Remember when we thought we were good with just a smear of zinc oxide across the nose and baby oil everywhere else? Yeah, that’s hardly the case today. I have replaced my zinc with lotions and creams that help protect my skin, hair color and even manicure from the sun.
I put sunscreen on every day. EVERY DAY. This is no longer just for a day at the beach, ladies. Before I put any makeup on, I start with a daily lotion with SPF in it. My esthetician convinced me to try a tinted lotion with SPF 60. Yeah, that felt like I covered my face with butter and I don’t recommend it. I stick with Beyond Belief Vita C + 15 SPF moisturizer. It’s light and 15 SPF will keep you covered during your commute to the office or trip to check the mail.
I also color my hair and as a working mom/housekeeper/dog walker/personal chef, I simply do not have time to color more than I already do. So it is very important for me to keep my color as long as I possibly can. I use color protect shampoo and conditioner, but I also use color protect styling products. Yup, they have sun protection for your hair. These help prevent your hair color from fading, therefore extending the time between coloring.
Have you noticed after an afternoon at the pool your manicure or pedicure will look a little yucky? Yup, sun can fade dark colors and yellow lighter ones. There are a ton of topcoats with UV protection. Orly Polishield is a good one.
So there you have it, a small bit of summer advice. I would love to hear any other summer saviors you may have. Wait, is that the ice-cream truck? Got to go!
